หลักการที่ 1. Contractions : การลดรูป/ตัวย่อ
การเขียนแบบทางการ บทความ หรืองานวิจัยต่างๆ ไม่แนะนำให้ใช้การลดรูปหรือตัวย่อ
ให้เขียนเป็นแบบเต็มค่ะ เช่น
Informal: I donʼt believe that the results are accurate.
Formal: The results are not believed to be accurate.
หลักการที่ 2 Phrasal verb : กริยาวลี หรือกริยาที่มี 2 คำขึ้นไป
มักเจอในการใช้แบบไม่ทางการ ดังนั้นหากจะเขียนแบบทางการแนะนำให้ใช้คำศัพท์ที่ความหมายเดียวกัน 1 คำเน้นๆตรงๆไปเลยค่ะ เช่น
Informal: The results of the study were mixed up.
Formal: The results of the study were confused.

Informal: The patient got over his illness.
Formal: The patient recovered from his illness.
หลักการที่ 3 Slang/Colloquialism : การใช้สแลง/ภาษาพูด
Informal: It was raining cats and dogs.
* อย่างประโยคนี้ใช้ raining cats and dogs เป็นสแลงที่ใช้พูดอธิบายลักษณะฝนตกหนัก
Formal: It was raining very heavily.
หลักการที่ 4 First person pronouns : สรรพนามที่ใช้แทนตัวผู้พูด
แนะนำใช้ในรูปประโยคแบบ Passive voice
หรือเลี่ยงการใช้ Active voice โดยใช้สรรพนามขึ้นต้นเป็นประธาน เช่น
Informal: We believe the practice is unsustainable.
Formal: It is believed the practice is unsustainable.
อีกตัวอย่าง
Informal: I considered various research methods for the study.
Formal: Various research methods were considered for the study.
